Yahoo! Search Marketing joining forces with Microsoft AdCenter sounds like a good idea for Microsoft in theory, but will it work? Microsoft would benefit from boosting its market share of search, and Yahoo’s dominant position in the display ads market will be a major asset to the company if the deal goes ahead.

Yahoo Inc announced on Wednesday an exclusive partnership with Bebo to manage display advertising on the social networking Web site in Britain and Ireland, giving it access to more than 11 million sought-after users. The two groups said under the agreement Yahoo would sell the majority of the display and video advertising on Bebo, the UK and Ireland’s most popular social networking site. The site has an estimated 11.6 million users in the two countries and 38 million users worldwide.

Investors—unwilling to hang in as Yahoo tried to match search giant Google —shied away, causing the stock price to fall roughly 40% to $25.56 over the past year. Social-networking sites, such as News Corp.’s MySpace, created extra competition, jabbing at Yahoo’s sides for advertising dollars. The organization even faced fighting from within, culminating in a leaked internal memo unfavorably comparing the company’s efforts to peanut butter.

Google, the search engine company, displaced Yahoo as the world’s second-most-visited Web site ingoogleG.jpg November and closed in on the leader, Microsoft, a market researcher said yesterday. Visitors to Google’s sites rose 9.1 percent, to 475.7 million in November from a year earlier, while those to Yahoo sites rose 5.2 percent, to 475.3 million, the researcher, ComScore Networks, said. Both sites trail Microsoft, which had 501.7 million visitors, ComScore said.

So news that up-and-comer MySpace.com beat incumbent Yahoo! for most monthly page views for the first time in November understandably grabbed headlines. Yahoo chief executive Terry Semel touted the new platform for matching advertising to search queries as "a significant turning point" that would "unlock the potential" of its huge base of users.

Bereft of any new music to promote, Britney Spears was nevertheless the hottest thing on the yahoo.jpgInternet this year, judging from Yahoo’s annual list of popular search terms.

Of course, a surge in online voyeurs seeking recently posted pictures of Britney sans panties didn’t hurt. But a Yahoo spokeswoman said "Britney" had the title of No. 1 search term sewn up even before the risque photos surfaced.

Yahoo today released its Top 10 Searches for 2006 and once again pop singer Britney Spears reigns recycled.pngsupreme. "Britney Spears" has been the leading query for the past five years, having only been dethroned briefly in 2004 by Paris Hilton.

Editors, it turns out, have a hand in supporting the Spears regime. Yahoo’s list, like certain celebrities best left unnamed, has gone under the knife for the sake of appearance. Unseemly search terms have been unceremoniously excised.
