Let’s start with what Google says. In a nutshell, it considers links to be like votes. In addition, it considers that some votes are more
important than others. PageRank is Google’s system of counting link votes and determining which pages are most important based on them. These scores are then used along with many other things to determine if a page will rank well in a search.

Rand Fishkin knows how valuable it is for a Web site to rank high in a Google search. But even this president of a search engine optimization firm was blown away by a proposal he received at a search engine optimization conference in London last month, where he was a panelist.

Okay so here’s the deal: not too long ago, Wikipedia had a page listing known websites with a PageRank of 10, and a large number of
sites with PageRank 9. However it was decided that the page contradicted Wikipedia’s article policy and so was deleted. (Personally I found it a great resource, but their rules are there for a reason, I guess.) Anyway, since I haven’t seen it replicated anywhere else on the internet, I have put a copy here on my site for anyone who misses the Wikipedia page to view.

Google’s Stefanie Ulrike Dürr has laid down the defining lines in the battle of link building and the
value of link popularity. In summary, the old motto, an earned link is the best link, still outranks almost any form of link building imaginable.

Although nobody knows the exact Google PageRank values the table below gives a fairly good
representation of how many external links, of certain PageRank values, are required to achieve a certain Google PageRank.
For example, if you want to know how many incoming PR4 links that are required to achieve a PR4 for your site, you simply look down the Page rank 4 column, until you come to the PR4 row and the answer is 18.5.
So you need 18.5 PR4 links to achieve a PageRank 4 for your site? Not quite.

This article is based mainly on an original article by Google founders Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page
but also on hearsay, speculation and rumours. Google is not interested in allowing the public to know exactly how the PR is calculated since it is then easier to trick or cheat the search engine and since this would undermine its credibility. It does however appear that a variation over the basic formula is still used.

I received an RFP from a company that ought to know better that wanted to know how much I’d
charge to get their site 500 one-way Pagerank 2 or better links. Another company wanted to know how long it would take me to seed 1,000 blogs with a link to their site in the blog comment field. And another wanted to know how many links I could buy for their site for $25,000.
