Microsoft is doing more than snapping up advertising companies and cementing ad partnerships. On the infrastructure side of its growing advertising business, It also is continuing to refine its platform and tools for its existing customer base.

In an acknowledgment of how relevance in search advertising has been so successful, Microsoft moved to give higher quality ranked ads a better shot at appearing. Slowly but surely, Microsoft and Yahoo have been moving closer to Google’s model of slavish devotion to relevance when it comes to serving ads alongside content. They won’t phrase it in those terms, but it’s not difficult to see who the target is for online ad success.

Microsoft last week invited its top advertisers to Redmond to dazzle them with the latest and greatest bits of its adCenter advertising MS Adcenter1.jpgplatform and emerging projects from its adCenter Labs (adLabs) testing grounds. A new release of adCenter is expected in the next 2 months, with many of the new features resulting from testing and customer feedback collected through adLabs. The update will contain some small usability fixes, and mark a pilot release of Microsoft Content Ads, the new contextually-targeted ad program that shows text ads on sites on Microsoft-owned sites.

This morning I attended a briefing at Microsoft that was meant to introduce what’s new with MS Adcenter.jpgMSN/Windows Live. Overall the event was well attended and well organized by Microsoft. The first session, the one I was most interested, was about what Microsoft was doing in the advertising space.

In its effort to entrench itself in the search community, MSN has made significant investments not MS Adcenter1.jpgonly in technology and personnel, but in the area of research as well. One such example is Microsoft adCenter Labs.

Microsoft adCenter has a new release launching Saturday, August 5th, and one of the upgrades dvi.pngincludes the long awaited Firefox browser support.

Microsoft sent out an email to their premium adCenter customers, which included the following:

* Now, use Microsoft adCenter with the Firefox 1.5 browser!
* Daily, weekly and monthly data will be updated every hour to help you view results and optimize campaigns in real-time.
* Select the time frame for which you want your campaign and order summaries to show, instead of viewing them in the life-to-date format.
* User-interface changes to the reporting tab will make usability simpler.
* API customers will now have access to more procedure calls. Detailed API communications will be sent to API customers. (more…)

MSN first announced adLab back in January, but it has now been made available to everyone (in font_truetype.pngbeta) with a wide variety of interesting keyword tools for advertisers and marketers. They have launched with 11 demos, broken down into areas Paid Search, Contextual Advertising, Behavior Targeting and Emerging Markets.
