For a rookie blogger, there’s nothing more disheartening than seeing "0 COMMENTS" at the end of a six-day-old post. Or checking your traffic stats on SiteMeter and finding you’ve gotten only three page views that day: two from your mother and one from someone who was looking for nude photos of Jennifer Lopez and Googled his way to your post about knitting booties for your infant niece.

A new release of Wordpress 2.3 was shipped last night. One of the features it sports is:

Our new update notification lets you know when there is a new release of WordPress or when any of the plugins you use has an update available. It works by sending your blog URL, plugins, and version information to our new api.wordpress.org service which then compares it to the plugin database and tells you what the latest and greatest is you can use.

Q:I’m thinking of starting a blog and am curious about selling advertising on it. Do bloggers make much money from ads? How would I go about selling ads on my site? I have a full-time job, so I don’t need to make a living off of this, but it would be great to bring in a few extra bucks.

A: From a business point of view, there are two reasons to start a blog. One is as a marketing tool to bring exposure, credibility and clientele to an existing business - for instance, using a blog about gardening to promote a local plant nursery.

Writing a great headline means crafting an enticing invitation to a prospective reader. It’s not the whole story, nor is it an attempt toblogger_1.gif convince anyone to do anything other than to keep reading. That being said, it seems you can’t move two pages on the web without tripping across a poorly-crafted headline. While many contain one or more necessary elements, other factors are often left out of the headline, diminishing the overall power and draw of this critical aspect of your copy.
