The Federal Trade Commission’s decision to approve Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick without conditions runs counter to the warnings of a host of privacy and consumer advocates, as well as members of Congress. With a single dissenter, the FTC found that there was no cause to hold up the merger.

One reason historians study the past: Events are cyclical. What happened before happens again. The Federal Trade Commission should have more closely studied past mistakes before approving Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick. Google is becoming the new Microsoft, only much worse.

Google just passed the first but not last hurdle in its $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick, as the Federal Trade Commission this morning gave the go-ahead on a 4-1 vote. Now the ball’s in European regulators’ court, and that decision could stretch as far out as April 2.

WASHINGTON | With U.S. antitrust clearance for its DoubleClick purchase, Google’s focus now turns to European regulators, who are expected to be more critical of the top search engine linking up with a market leader in online advertising. The proposed $3.1 billion transaction, which is strongly opposed by privacy advocates, cannot be completed without approval from the European Commission, whose review deadline is April 2.

Advertising is the bread and butter of the web, yet most of my friends claim that they never click on ads, typically using a peacock tone that signals their pride in being ad-averse. The geekier amongst them go out of their way to run Mozilla scripts to scrape ads away, bemoaning the presence of consumer culture. Yet, companies increasingly rely on ad revenue to turn a profit and, while clicking on ads ?may? be declining, it certainly hasn’t gone away.

McAfee’s new report on typosquatting details how 1 in 5 typo-squatted domain names is being funded by Google AdSense. For their report, McAfee studied 1.9 million typographical variations of 2,771 of the most popular and well known Web sites. Of these, nearly 7% were suspected typo-squatters, defined as domain names registered for the sole purpose of generating advertising revenue from people who mistyped URLs.

The eternal story line in media is "Google (GOOG ) is moving into [fill in the blank]." In recent weeks, Google announced its Android operating system for mobile phones and its OpenSocial standard, which will link applications across major social-networking sites, so long as (for now, at least) they’re not named Facebook.

There is no question that you can make some good money with Google AdSense, but you’re setting yourself up for disaster if you make any of these Top 10 mistakes! Do not use fake information when opening your Google AdSense account. Google says that’s a no-no and they will cut your account off and keep all the money you may have earned. Besides, trying to hide your true identity can cause serious problems with the I.R.S. or whoever your tax authority is.

Search Engine Land is reporting that in the coming weeks, according to Google, Google will drop the “Advertise on this site” link displayed next to AdSense ads. Using this link, advertisers were able to directly target a specific site. However, AdWords still has targeting by URL available for placement-targeted campaigns, as long as the webmaster offers these placements via their AdSense account (choose AdSense -> AdSense Setup -> Channels -> Show this channel to advertisers as an ad placement)… and I don’t see anything in this announcement saying Google plans on dropping that too, though I asked them just in case.

For a rookie blogger, there’s nothing more disheartening than seeing "0 COMMENTS" at the end of a six-day-old post. Or checking your traffic stats on SiteMeter and finding you’ve gotten only three page views that day: two from your mother and one from someone who was looking for nude photos of Jennifer Lopez and Googled his way to your post about knitting booties for your infant niece.
