What is the first thing you would do if you accidentally clicked your own Adsense ads that are displayed on your website? Google has been has been intently focused on click fraud for years, but has done a piss-poor job of communicating this. Its communications strategy has effectively been to say, "Click fraud’s not a problem, third-party auditors like ClickForensics don’t know what they’re talking about, and if you don’t just take our word for it we’re not going to bother to explain ourselves." Finally, however, the company appears to have gotten as wise about this communications challenge as it has about others.

Advertising-supported companies have long turned to the courts to squelch products that let consumers block or skip ads: it happened in the famous lawsuit against the VCR in 1979 and again with ReplayTV in 2001. Tomorrow’s legal fight may be over Web browser add-ons that let people avoid advertisements. These add-ons are growing in functionality and popularity, which has led legal experts surveyed this week by CNET News.com to speculate about when the first lawsuit will be filed.

Given that most of Google’s $13 billion in revenue comes from clicks on ads, you would think the words "click fraud" would inspire fear in Shuman Ghosemajumder, the company’s senior product manager and resident click-fraud czar. Q:I’m thinking of starting a blog and am curious about selling advertising on it. Do bloggers make much money from ads? How would I go about selling ads on my site? I have a full-time job, so I don’t need to make a living off of this, but it would be great to bring in a few extra bucks.

A: From a business point of view, there are two reasons to start a blog. One is as a marketing tool to bring exposure, credibility and clientele to an existing business - for instance, using a blog about gardening to promote a local plant nursery.

Google is being sued in an Australian court for "potentially misleading consumers," reports News.com.au.
