One of the nice things about the search world over the last few years was that we were starting to see less focus on "get www.gifrankings quick" style methods and more focus on what some have dubbed "holistic" search marketing. The idea was to stop focusing on finding the holes in the algorithm that would help push your site to the top of the rankings quickly and to focus on building sites that will rank well in the long term and that will attract qualified visitors that will convert to buyers. Unfortunately, the introduction of link baiting and social media seems to be taking us a few steps backwards in this regard.

Google’s VP-advertising sales, Tim Armstrong, touted his company’s ability to court brand advertisers during a question-and-answer google8.jpgsession at Bank of America’s Technology Conference today. He talked of a Long Tail of products, explaining that previously, by using traditional media, marketers could only advertise one or two products at a time because of how long it would take to create and execute the advertising.

Windows Vista is finally out and along with that Microsoft seems to have kick-started its Vista-Live joint initiative. This initiative aims live.jpgto push Microsoft’s new web properties in tandem with their dominant Windows operating system - and so become a leader in the web industry as well. Basically this means that Microsoft makes its Windows Live web properties the default in Windows Vista PCs, where possible - for example Live Search is the default search engine in IE7 on new Vista machines.

Google have just announced two main changes to the AdWords system: there will be a new ‘Quality Score’ column and a change to google_adwords.jpgthe Quality Score algorithm. The changes made are said to improve the algorithm for evaluating the landing page quality and incorporating landing page content retrieved by the AdWords system, in an effort to phase out advertisers trying to get cheap traffic to poorly designed landing pages.

I’m not a huge Adsense earner, but at the beginning of this month I decided to more aggressively try to increase my revenues. I’ve google6.jpgnow seen a 50+% increase in my Adsense earnings since I began. What does that mean in real terms? It means my earnings would now comfortably pay off the monthly mortgage repayments on a detached 4-bedroom house in the UK.

Last year, the average click fraud rate of pay-per-click advertisements appearing on search engine content networks rose to 19.2 clickfraud2.jpgpercent for the last quarter of 2006, the highest yet, according to Tom Cuthbert, CEO of Click Forensics. I have been doing SEO for some time now and I have been witness to many a strange occurrence regarding serps. Most of these weirdgoogle.jpg occurrence I would have to say are directly attributed to a Google Filter or Google penalty. So I have been inspired by a post over at webmasterworld and as far as I know there is not a current list out online that list’s all of the potential Google penalties so I have decided to put together an arbitrary list of potential Google Penalties.
